A Bedtime Routine Session in Austin, TX: And Why This Home Mattered

Some sessions I walk away from thinking, ‘That’s why I do this.’ This was one of them.

This family was selling their Austin home, the one they’d lived in for eight years, the one they brought both kids home from the hospital to. Before they closed that chapter, the mom wanted to document this home as part of their story. Not a formal portrait session. The bedtime routine. The bath. The books. The ordinary stuff that happens every night in those specific rooms, in that specific house, that won’t exist in exactly this way ever again.

Bath Time

The little girl had the most joyful personality I’ve seen in a while. She wasn’t shy in front of the camera at all, just genuinely herself. Those are my favorite frames to make.

Dad Time

The dad is not a posed-photo guy. But get him on the bedroom floor with his kids, reading and laughing and just being their dad? That part was all there. No posing required.

Reading, Brushing Teeth, and Everything In Between

This stretch of the evening is what the whole session was really about. Story time with mom and daughter. The son and his dad searching for Waldo in his book. Mom and her son reading side by side. The little girl brushing her teeth. Just a regular Thursday in a house they’re about to leave behind and with a new chapter beginning.

What I keep thinking about: the routines feel unremarkable until they’re over. The bath, the books, the same hallway every night, it’s easy to move through it without really seeing it. But these photos exist now. They’ll have them long after the new owners have painted over every wall.
